NYDN: Simple steps to protect nursing home staff, and residents
Recently, we learned that one Washington Heights nursing home may have had more than 50 deaths related to COVID-19. This abhorrent outcome was not unique. Nearly one in five people who die from the coronavirus in New York City are residents of a nursing home or other adult care facility. Cases often spread throughout nursing homes via staff who are carrying the virus asymptomatically.
The first line of defense for nursing homes needs to be stopping the virus from entering through their front doors. Gov. Cuomo recently addressed this issue by stopping the discharge of COVID-19-positive patients to nursing homes and requiring that staff be tested twice weekly.
